The Catholic Church has long been a beacon of hope, compassion, and healing in communities around the globe. In the Archdiocese of Madang, the Catholic Church Health Services (CCHS) exemplifies this enduring commitment, playing a pivotal role in delivering essential healthcare services to some of the most underserved populations in Papua New Guinea.

Archdiocese of Madang

The Archdiocese of Madang is situated in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, and serves five districts: Madang, Sumkar, Bogia, Middle Ramu, and Usino Bundi. This expansive diocese plays a vital role in delivering health services to a diverse population spread across both urban and remote areas.

Diocesan Health Services

The Diocesan Health Services encompass a range of corporate and public health services managed by the Diocesan Health Manager. Currently, the catchment population served is approximately 214,773, highlighting the extensive reach and impact of these services throughout the five districts.

Corporate Services

The corporate services function as the backbone of health administration, comprising several key divisions:

  1. Management
  2. Human Resource and Administration
  3. Finance
  4. Property Management and Health Programs

These divisions work collaboratively to ensure efficient health service delivery, maintaining high standards of care and operational effectiveness.

Public Health Services

Public Health Services within the Archdiocese consist of a network of about eighteen (18) health facilities, ranging from aid posts to health centers, classified as levels 1 to 3 according to National Health Service Standards. These facilities are strategically located in rural and remote areas to provide essential primary health care services, addressing the health needs of the communities they serve.

The Archdiocese of Madang is dedicated to improving health outcomes, fostering community well-being, and responding effectively to the unique challenges faced by its diverse population.

Facilities

Madang Province is home to 3 Health Centers, 8 Health Sub Centers and 7 Aid Posts that are key players in providing vital healthcare services to the local community. These facilities, while facing some challenges, also have numerous strengths and opportunities for growth that are worth highlighting.

Infrastructure

Accessibility and Road Connectivity

While some facilities are easily accessible by road, others face challenges due to their remote locations, challenging geographical terrain, and poor road conditions.

Communications

Communication infrastructure varies across facilities, with some benefitting from reliable cell phone connectivity. However, more remote locations often lack dependable network coverage. Enhancing communication services will improve operational coordination and responsiveness to patient needs. Future installations of VHF radios and satellite internet, such as Starlink, could further strengthen communication capabilities.

Vaccine Storage Systems

The health centers are equipped with cold chain systems for vaccine storage, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of vaccines. This infrastructure supports the clinics' commitment to safeguarding public health through immunization and disease prevention.

Sanitation and Water Supply

Sanitation standards at these clinics are commendable, featuring functional septic systems and fixed wash basins. The availability of running water ensures a clean and hygienic environment, essential for both patient care and staff welfare. For facilities without a continuous water supply, backup water tanks provide a reliable reserve, ensuring uninterrupted access to water.

Power Supply

While some facilities have access to a consistent electricity supply, others face intermittent power availability. These facilities often rely on backup generators and solar power systems to ensure continuity of essential services. Expanding access to reliable electricity across all locations would significantly enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.
